"A poet makes himself a visionary through a long, boundless, and systematized disorganization of all the senses. All forms of love, of suffering, of madness; he searches himself, he exhausts within himself all poisons, and preserves their quintessences. Unspeakable torment, where he will need the greatest faith, a superhuman strength, where he becomes all men: the great invalid, the great criminal, the great accursed—and the Supreme Scientist! For he attains the unknown! Because he has cultivated his soul, already rich, more than anyone! He attains the unknown, and, if demented, he finally loses the understanding of his visions, he will at least have seen them! So what if he is destroyed in his ecstatic flight through things unheard of, unnameable: other horrible workers will come; they will begin at the horizons where the first one has fallen! " ~French poet Arthur Rimbaud Poetry (from the Greek 'poiesis'/ποίησις [poieo/ποιέω], simply is a form of literary art in which language is used for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or in lieu of, its apparent meaning. Poetry may be written independently, as discrete poems, or may occur in conjunction with other arts, as in poetic drama, hymns, lyrics, or prose poetry. It is published in dedicated magazines, individual collections and wider anthologies. Poetry primarily is governed by idiosyncratic forms and conventions to suggest differential interpretation to words, or to evoke emotive responses. Devices such as assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and rhythm are sometimes used to achieve musical or incantatory effects. The use of ambiguity, symbolism, irony, and other stylistic elements of poetic diction often leaves a poem open to multiple interpretations. Similarly, metaphor, simile, and metonymy create a resonance between otherwise disparate images—a layering of meanings, forming connections previously not perceived. Kindred forms of resonance may exist, between individual verses, in their patterns of rhyme or rhythm. I write poetry because it spills from my veins when they are opened to the wonders and the horrors which are set upon me by the simple act of living. It is my expectation and my joy to write and share what I can with those who will hear my voice. ~ Phillip
I consider myself fortunate to have been
able to keep an innocent quality from my youth.
It is way too easy for us, as adults to
suspect everything and everyone around us.
To assume others are more than they
appear, detracts from the human condition and most of my really
favourite topics involve working with the life stories of others.
If I put "my own spin" on their lives,
it becomes something other than the thing it was meant to become.
People fascinate me, I am constantly
watching others as their lives unfold some small story before me, and I
often feel privileged to have witnessed it.
I feel it’s important as writers to
maintain a childlike quality of ourselves so that we can appreciate each
story for its own merit. I enjoy being able to view life through the
eyes I have, to see each day as a new opportunity to explore and uncover
how "I feel about things".
It is a 'worthy journey' if you can
draw a beautiful map for those who may follow in your footsteps, but it
is still their journey. It is my hope that you will step with me for a
while onto my path and enjoy the things I have experienced through my
writing. Grab a coffee and join me in my thoughts. |
